Do I really need a survey? The place looks in good order

If you had seen some of the things that I have seen over the last 35 years, you would certainly have a survey ! (see Gallery).

Why don’t you charge VAT?

I am now semi-retired and keep my small business both ‘personal’ and below the VAT threshold.

How long does this Survey process take?

Time on site takes as long as is needed to do a good job. Time from instruction for me to proceed to receipt of report by email (hard copy to follow) is usually about 5 to 7 days.

Can I ask questions about specific items that concern me?

Yes, of course. All my surveys are very special, both to me and to my clients.

Will you phone me after the inspection?

Yes, if you wish.

Will you advise me as to the type of survey to have?

Of course. I will always act in your best interests.

Can you recommend builders, etc?

Yes - and plumbers, plasterers, electricians, decorators, etc.

Are you available to discuss any aspect of the property purchase procedure after the survey?


I am concerned about a specific defect. Can you comment on individual items of potential disrepair?

Yes. I call this “defect diagnosis”.

We are telephoning for quotes to see who is cheapest…..?

You are likely to receive what you pay for………. However, I am semi retired, and over the years my fees have always been competitive. I am not often beaten on price or service.

Can you find hidden defects?

No, not if they are hidden! I have however very considerable experience and knowledge that enables me to identify the conditions where defects may exist, and I will then ‘follow the trail’ of suspicion and recommend further investigation if needed.

Do you have professional indemnity insurance?

All Chartered Surveyors are obliged to carry professional indemnity insurance. This is not defects insurance, and covers only claims for negligence.

Are you qualified?

Yes, I am a Fellow of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (FRICS). As importantly, I have been inspecting property to determine condition for many years.

Why should I choose you and not one of your many other qualified colleagues?

I am independent of any bank, building society or estate agent. I have . 35 years of experience in all aspects of the property market. I treat each survey as a very personal commitment to my clients. My charges are competitive …..(I am not usually beaten on price). My availability is good. I prepare all reports as soon as possible. I use “plain English” in all my reports and adopt a friendly and professional approach over the telephone.
